Status of the Water Resources Center Archives (WRCA)
April 2010

I wanted to give those of you that have an interest in WRCA a summary of the current status.  WRCA was established in 1958 as a system-wide unit as part of the University of California Office of the President (UCOP), Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR).

Last October 2, 2009, ANR determined that WRCA was no longer an appropriate fit for the Division, due to budget cuts and the adoption of a new strategic vision. The announcement stated that ANR would find a "new academic home" for WRCA by June 30, 2010.

Barbara Allen-Diaz, ANR Vice-President of Academic Programs and Strategic Initiatives, was put in charge of finding a new, but was not able to devote much time to this activity until recently.  ANR decided to send out a Request for Application (RFA) to specific departments at four UC campuses: Berkeley, Davis, Riverside and Merced. The RFA was sent out on April 12, 2010 and is due May 15, 2010.

The RFA includes some background information about WRCA and the following selection criteria for the "future custodianship of the Archives. The written proposal should address how the interested college/library will meet each of these details concerning the collection.":

A. Long-term commitment to maintain and improve the WRCA.

B. Continued maintenance of the archive materials as a single unified collection, as disbursed across existing college/library collections, or other arrangement.

C. Wide accessibility of the collection to scholars and members of the public, including technological improvements and/or other innovations.

D. Plans for involvement of the existing or new WRCA Advisory Board, which currently reports to the Head Librarian.

E. Sound and sustainable plan for location, funding and staffing of the Archives.

F. Plan for transference of "ownership" of the archives, including pertinent practical and/or administrative matters, accompanied by an associated schedule.

A Review Panel will review all of the proposals and make a recommendation to Dan Dooley, ANR Vice-President and Barbara Allen-Diaz sometime after the RFA is due. The goal is to have a new academic home for WRCA by July 1, 2010, if possible.

Although the deadline for the RFA is coming soon, WRCA is hopeful that ANR will receive many proposals. WRCA looks forward to a final resolution, and continuing dynamic services and administration for this unique, world-class collection.
