CALL for ABSTRACTS

GRA 15th Annual Meeting
“Assessment, Use, and Management of Groundwater in Areas of Limited Supply”

September 21-22, 2006
Bahia Resort
San Diego

In many basins of California, groundwater is a marginal resource due to the hydraulic properties of sediments, water-quality characteristics, recharge amounts, basin size, or other factors. However, in the face of rising population and potential reductions in other water sources, there is increased interest in utilizing more groundwater in these areas. To address this issue, this year’s annual GRA meeting will focus on the assessment, use and management of groundwater in areas of limited supply. Topics planned to be covered at the meeting include, but are not limited to:

Groundwater in Small Coastal Watersheds
> Aquifer Storage and Recovery
> Desalination of Brackish Groundwater
> Water recycling

Groundwater in Fractured Rock
> Groundwater Recharge Processes in Fractured Rock Terrain and Methods of Recharge Estimation
> Groundwater Storage in Fractured Rock
> Well Hydraulics
> Groundwater Exploration Methods

Groundwater in Desert Basins
> Groundwater Recharge Processes in Desert Basins and Methods of Recharge Estimation
> Groundwater Storage Assessment and Uncertainty
> Groundwater Production Management

Groundwater and Geotechnical Problems
> Development Induced Groundwater Recharge
> Slope Stability Issues
> Moisture Intrusion Issues
> Septic Mounding
> Groundwater Dewatering
> Dewatering Discharge Management

Trans-Border Groundwater Issues

> Waste Water Overflow, Treatment and Re-Use
> Inter-Basin Water Transfer

Ecological Issues
> Effects of groundwater development on riparian habitats
> Endangered species act requirements

Water-Quality Issues
> Emerging Contaminants
> Saltwater Intrusion
> Native Radioactivity in Groundwater
> Septic Discharge Impacts on Water Quality
> Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment (GAMA) Program

Policy Issues
> Water Law
> Land Use Management Policies in Areas Reliant on Marginal Groundwater Resources

Abstracts for Papers and Poster Presentations

GRA welcomes submittals of abstracts for papers and poster presentations on the topics listed above. The deadline for submitting an abstract for a Paper or a Poster Presentation is June 2, 2006. Please feel free to contact Bill Pipes, Geomatrix Consultants [(559) 264-2535, wpipes@geomatrix.com] or Sarah Raker, MACTEC Engineering and Consulting, Inc., [(510)-628-3234, slraker@mactec.com] if you would like to discuss your topic for this Symposium before submitting your abstract, or if you have any questions.
