In today’s environmental industry (specifically in contaminated groundwater sites), most clients, regulatory agencies, and consultants use multiple, disconnected systems to store and manage their environmental information: e-mail, office documents, intranets, enterprise applications, analytical tools, and the Internet. Mission-critical information, data, and expertise needed to make better and more informed decisions are dispersed across multiple silos of information and data stores, not just enterprise applications. The reality of this situation has become a key focus as many sites move to closure and long-term monitoring and stewardship. Possession and real time access to critical environmental data has become a necessity. In addition, many companies are facing greater scrutiny then ever before as shareholders demand accountability and accurate reporting (Sarbanes-Oxley Act) and environmental liabilities are not exempt from this requirement.

In 2005, GRA held its first seminar on Environmental Information Management Systems in San Jose, California. The event drew a larger audience than expected, demonstrating a strong interest in environmental data management. GRA received requests to repeat this event in southern California. Two years is a long time in the rapidly advancing information technology field. GRA will hold its second seminar to focus on how groundwater professionals can optimize their data management on August 22nd at the Irvine Hilton.

Speakers will cover the full spectrum of EIMS applications used for groundwater and related data:

  1. History of development of EIMS
  2. Why use EIMS software packages?
  3. Types and features of EIMS
  4. Available platforms (web vs client server) and their advantages and limitations
  5. Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
  6. Costs – purchase, implementation, operation, transaction
  7. Security
  8. Which EIMS is right for you? How to select a system based on your data management requirements
  9. Why an EIMS (of any flavor) is useless without data management planning
  10. Portal Systems to manage documents and reports
  11. Data visualization
  12. Data automation and sensors
  13. The future of EIMS (where are they heading, can they integrate with existing systems?)
  14. Examples of EIMS (case studies)
  15. Lessons learned
