This Symposium will provide "state of groundwater storage in California", and the opportunity to discuss many critical factors related to groundwater storage and recharge, through two days of presentations and posters. Sessions will cover: legal, regulatory, and policy issues; water-quality concerns; planning tools; and a broad range of case studies. The speaker presentations will also highlight numerous successful groundwater storage and conjunctive use programs operating in Sacramento Valley (Yuba County Water Agency), San Joaquin Valley (Kern Water Bank) and numerous areas of Southern California.

Invited Presentations Include:

  • Global Climate: Time for a Change - Bill Patzert, California Institute of Technology
  • The Importance of Groundwater Storage for California's Future Water Supply - Kamyar Guvetchi, California Department of Water Resources
  • Evolving Groundwater Storage Policy in California - Tam Doduc, Chair, California State Water Resources Control Board
  • Update on Groundwater Recharge Project Requirements and Permitting - Pamela Creedon, Executive Officer, Central Valley & Gerard Thibeault, Santa Ana RWQCBs
  • ASR and the Quest for Water Supply Sustainability - R. David G. Pyne, ASR Systems
  • ASR Design Concepts - Keys to Success - Tom Missimer, Schlumberger Water Services
  • Groundwater Storage in the Integrated Regional Water Management Plans - John Woodling, California Department of Water Resources

The combination of invited speakers and experts from key disciplines, along with talks selected from submitted abstracts, will make this an important event for all professionals considering or currently involved with managed aquifer recharge and conjunctive use projects.

Sequence stratigraphy is the study of genetically related sedimentary facies within a framework of chronostratigraphic surfaces (unconformities). For the last several decades it has been the state-of-the-art method for delineating reservoir geometry and continuity in the petroleum industry, but has only recently been applied to ground water studies. In the Long Beach area, this technique has been utilized to construct a new 3D stratigraphic model of water-bearing sediment. The resultant framework and geologic structure differs considerably from what has been proposed in earlier studies. Fundamental to the new interpretation is the recognition of ongoing tectonic deformation throughout nearly all of Quaternary time that has impacted the geometry and character of the sequences, which provides additional potential pathways for vertical migration of seawater and surface contaminants into the producing aquifers. Because the subsurface distribution of lithologies can more readily be predicted and mapped within a sequence-stratigraphic framework, further application of these techniques in the LA region should prove valuable in the design and operation of Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) projects, improve operations of seawater barriers, and identify areas of aquifer vulnerability.

Daniel Ponti is a research geologist at the Menlo Park, California, office of the U. S. Geological Survey, Earthquake Hazards Team. Dr. Ponti received B.S. and M.S. degrees in geology and engineering geology from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in Quaternary geology from the University of Colorado at Boulder. His research at the USGS has focused primarily on mapping, age-dating and stratigraphic analysis of Quaternary-age sedimentary deposits in southern California as a means of constraining rates of movement along active surface faults and blind thrusts, and to provide refined structural/stratigraphic frameworks for ground water studies. The critical need for a robust stratigraphic framework for the L.A. area, to address both earthquake and groundwater issues, prompted the formation of one of the USGS' first multi-disciplinary projects in southern California, which Dr. Ponti led from 2000-2006. In addition to his L.A research, Dr. Ponti has also worked on evaluating the origin, paleoseismic history, and hazard potential of secondary ground ruptures produced by concealed faults, and has served as coordinator for USGS post-earthquake geologic studies following the 1989 Loma Prieta, 1992 Landers, 1994 Northridge, and 1999 Chi-chi (Taiwan) earthquakes.
