The potential for human exposures resulting from subsurface
vapor intrusion to indoor air is a topic of significant concern
and debate. This one-day symposium will provide attendees
with an overview of the issues, along with a summary of the
state of the science and practice in California. The workshop
will also familiarize attendees with recent and emerging regulatory
guidance, along with various tools and strategies that can
be employed to evaluate site-specific exposures, where site-specific
evaluations are warranted. The course will give an overview
of predictive models, but will focus on the Johnson and Ettinger
Model.
Who should attend: The symposium is intended for regulatory
agency personnel, consultants, responsible parties, property
owners and developers interested in the latest strategies
for understanding and addressing this exposure pathway.
Topics will include:
- Overview of the indoor air issue from the California perspective
- Case Study: a facility in Mountain View, CA
- Basis for predictive models
- Collection of field data: groundwater, soil, soil gas
and physical parameters
- Background air quality and its impact on the assessment
of vapor intrusion
- Engineering controls
- Hypothetical site characterization/risk assessment/remediation
approach to a site
- Panel discussion
Speakers will include:
- David Berry, Department of Toxic Substances Control
- Roger Brewer, San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality
Control Board
- Robert Ettinger, Shell Oil Products US
- Dan Gallagher, Department of Toxic Substances Control
- Paul Johnson, Arizona State University
- Todd McAlary, GeoSyntec
- Ronald Mosley, US Environmental Protection Agency, Office
of Research and Development
- Eric Nichols, LFR Levine-Fricke
- John Moody, US Environmental Protection Agency, Region
9

Dr. Roger Brewer is the principal author of the San
Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board's (RWQCB's)
July 2003 Technical Document on Environmental Screening Levels
(ESLs). This document is an update to RWQCB's December 2001
Risk Based Screening Levels (RBSLs). Dr. Brewer will present
an overview of the scope and intent of the ESLs and summarize
key updates and changes in the July 2003 update. Most notably,
the update contains new ESLs for indoor air and shallow soil
gas that were developed to address potential vapor intrusion.
Dr. Brewer will describe how the indoor air and soil gas ESLs
were developed and how they are intended to be used. He also
will discuss limitations of the ESLs.
This month's dinner will be held at the Biltmore Hotel,
2151 Laurelwood Road, Santa Clara, California 95054. Tel:
