PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

BY BRIAN LEWIS

The Groundwater Resources Association (GRA) should be proud of its accomplishments. With over 600 members, we have four active branches with regularly scheduled meetings and informative talks. GRA also has had educational courses at a reasonable cost, a quarterly newsletter, and annual meetings. However, we can work more in sync as a statewide organization.

Our branches and the statewide organization co-exist. Neither group fully understands the issues the other group faces. In fact, sometimes the groups ignore, or worse, resent the other groups actions. It would seem we could better share information, both technical and administrative, between the branch and statewide organizations. When we have worked together, we have had a glimpse of the potential power of GRA.

To help our organization work better, we are in the process of developing Policy and Procedures (P&Ps). The dreaded P&Ps, I have to admit, is not an exciting topic. It is not as sexy as contaminant flow or conjunctive uses, but more of a sign that GRA is maturing as an organization. Our Executive Director, Harrison Phipps, is drafting several P&Ps. Our board and Branch Presidents will have a chance to review several P&Ps during the next several months. Concurrently, we must not lose sight of the technical issues that effect groundwater.

Our greatest asset is our members. We need to work together to help educate the public on the efficient use of groundwater as a resource. We need your help to further the goals of our association.
