The San Francisco Bay Branch is pleased to present:

Structural Influences on Contaminant Transport in Fractured and Faulted Sandstone

Featuring:

Nick Johnson, Ph. D.

Wednesday, March 21st

PRESENTATION:

The speaker spent the past ten years participating in the characterization of a large, former industrial site set in fractured and faulted sandstone.  A degree of consensus on the nature of the site’s fracture flow had become established, however his task was to evaluate the potential influence of the site’s faults on the pattern and magnitude of groundwater advection.  This talk summarizes his analysis of several data sets from this data-rich site, including a nearly 70-year monitoring record, several long-term aquifer tests, and a wide variety of data collected from hundreds of borings.  Coming from a more sand-and-gravel background, his challenge was to evaluate the potential for hydraulic barriers and preferential flow associated with the site’s faults in the context of remarkable observed hydraulic responses associated with the apparent high hydraulic diffusivity of the fractured sandstone.
