Sonoma Water Riverbank Filtration and Radial Collector Well Program

Featuring:

*NOTE THIS NOVEMBER MEETING IS ONE WEEK EARLIER THAN NORMAL TO AVOID CONFLICTS WITH THANKSGIVING

PRESENTATION:

The Sonoma County Water Agency (SCWA) provides water to several municipalities and water districts in Sonoma and Marin Counties. The SCWA water system serves approximately 570,000 people and has an estimated short-term peak production capacity of 112 million gallons per day (mgd). Water production is concentrated along the Russian River west of Santa Rosa, where the SCWA operates six radial collector wells, seven conventional vertical wells, an inflatable dam, and numerous infiltration ponds. This presentation provides an overview of the ongoing evaluation program for the radial collector wells. The goal of the program is to quantify and evaluate the potential causes of changes in water production capacity over time, extending from 1959 into the future. The collector wells include 13 to 18 foot-diameter caissons that are approximately 100 feet deep. The number of lateral wells near the base of each caisson varies from 6 to 14, with lateral lengths varying from 45 to 375 feet. The program includes visual inspections and measurements of the caissons by scuba divers, large scale aquifer testing, flow testing and video surveys in the laterals, and water quality testing. The results are used for planning for sustainable water supplies, operational optimization, and maintenance planning.
