"Groundwater Analysis Tools Developed by the GAMA Program"

Presented By:

Dori Bellan

California State Water Resources Control Board

 INTRODUCTION:

The California State Water Resources Control Board was required to create a statewide comprehensive groundwater quality monitoring program in 2001 as a result of Assembly Bill 599 (Pavley). This legislation also required all information to be publicly available. In 2003, the Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment (GAMA) Program began its statewide assessment of the groundwater resource used for public drinking water supplies. In 2013, the assessment expanded to the groundwater resource used for small system and domestic drinking water supplies, while continuing to monitor for trends. The Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), other new regulatory measures, an increased demand by water utilities to manage their groundwater resource, and the public’s heightened awareness of groundwater quality, all require better data tools for all to access in California. The GAMA Program’s Online Tools webpage provides an ever-increasing list of spatially interactive web applications to address many groundwater issues including groundwater quality trends, groundwater age, well construction, contamination to small system and domestic wells, and risk to contaminated groundwater. This GRA Cast will go through each of these tools and provide a sneak-peek into new upcoming tools soon to be released.

SPEAKER BIO:

Dori Bellan

Dori Bellan is an engineering geologist for the State Water Board’s GAMA Program. Dori attended Eastern Kentucky University for her undergraduate studies in Geology. Her graduate studies at the Center for Earthquake Research and Information at the University of Memphis were in geophysics and paleoseismology, in cooperation with the USGS. She has worked in the GAMA Program since 2005 and enjoys performing spatial analyses, employing new data technologies to better understand groundwater conditions, and communicating groundwater issues to the public with outreach and visual tools.

Moderator BIO:

Michael Bombard, PG, CHG

Michael Bombard, PG, CHG is a hydrogeologist with over 33 years experience conducting and managing projects that primarily revolve around groundwater. He successfully managed hundreds of projects ranging from small "one-offs" to multi-year multi-million dollar projects performed over several years. Recently, Mike successfully managed a first of its kind $1.2M Groundwater Well Asset Management Plan for a major northern California water utility. Mike provided technical direction on water-supply projects involving springs used for bottled water sources and production wells in the US and Mexico. He designed, installed, and/or properly abandoned monitoring, extraction, injection, and water supply wells for numerous sites in Northern California. He also designed and provided design and oversight of production well rehabilitation efforts in the US and Mexico. Mike installed and managed well and boring installation programs that used various drilling techniques including mud rotary, air rotary (casing hammer, Odex and Tubex) dual-tube percussion, hollow-stem auger and rock coring. He conducted well hydraulic testing including specific capacity, short- and long-term pumping tests, and slug tests and evaluated the test data. He has also evaluated hydrogeochemical data, monitored natural data and other data involving groundwater contamination.
