The Groundwater Resources Association (GRA) recognizes that due to travel and meeting restrictions relating to COVID-19 precautions it may not be currently possible to gather colleagues to attend this GRACast. If your office has purchased a registration with the intent of having multiple colleagues participate, GRA will allow you to share the login information with your office colleagues so you may call in from multiple locations. We strive to remain agile based on the current public health situation and desire to support our members in the best ways possible.

We will return to our normal policy of one login per location or office in the future.

We thank you for your continued support of GRA. Please stay safe and healthy!

HYDROLOGY IN THE SUPERCOMPUTING AGE

 PRESENTED BY:

REED MAXWELL - PRINCETON UNIVERSITY

SUMMARY OVERVIEW OF GRACAST:

Computational advances have revolutionized the field of hydrology. This presentation explores what big data and massively parallel simulations mean for the future of hydrologic discovery. Computational hydrology seeks to leverage modern computing capacity to study water and energy fluxes at spatial scales and complexity not previously possible. The so-called -resolution approach, has organized and accelerated this goal. A historical perspective starting with the early watershed models to more modern integrated and machine-learning (AI) approaches will be presented. The lecture will outline a path to move beyond our traditional siloed simulations and to leverage these large datasets and massive community-development investments to better connect our hydrologic models to the communities outside of hydrology.

SPEAKER:

Reed Maxwell - Princeton University

Reed Maxwell is a professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) and the High Meadows Environmental Institute (HMEI) at Princeton University. He also directs the Integrated Groundwater Modeling Center (IGWMC). His research interests are focused on understanding connections within the hydrologic cycle and how they relate to water quantity and quality under anthropogenic stresses. He was the 2020 Henry Darcy distinguished lecturer, an elected fellow of the American Geophysical Union, the 2018 Boussinesq Lecture and the 2017 School of Mines research award recipient. He has authored more than 160 peer-reviewed journal articles. At Princeton he currently leads a research group of graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and staff housed within CEE and HMEI. He holds a PhD degree in environmental water resources from the Civil and Environmental Engineering department at the university of California, Berkeley. MODERATOR:

Matt Tonkin - S.S Papadopulos & Associates

Matt is a hydrogeologist and current president of S.S. Papadopulos & Associates, inc. (SSP&A). He specializes in data synthesis and modeling to support groundwater, surface water, and soil, studies on behalf of public, private, and legal, clients. He received his PhD on the topic of calibration and uncertainty analysis and has instructed on these and other topics. His projects often include method and code development to improve the inferences possible from environmental data.
