"Hydrogeology of the Carpinteria Valley Groundwater Basin: from usable groundwater storage to seawater intrusion"
Dr. Hugo A. Loaiciga, P.E.
Professor of Hydrology and Water Resources, Department of Geography/UCSB
The Carpinteria Valley Groundwater Basin (CVGWB) is a relatively small, stratified, coastal aquifer. This lecture first reviews the CVGWB's hydrogeologic characteristics and possible hydraulic connection of its aquifer layers to the ocean floor through submarine canyons and by seawater-freshwater wedge. In addition, the lecture examines the water fluxes that replenish/deplete the CVGWB's storage. Emphasis is given to the calculation of basin recharge, safe yield, net inflow, and usable groundwater storage capacity. Results are evaluated considering data limitations and the strong climatic variability of the study area. Suggestions are made for sustainable management of the CVGWB and to improve existing numerical modeling capabilities.
Dr. Hugo A. Loaiciga has 30 years of experience in the study of groundwater basins and hydrologic systems in California and many other parts of the world. He has led projects for state, federal, and international agencies. He has published 265 technica and scientific papers, and teaches hydrology and water resources at UCSB.

Scholastic Sponsorship Program: The Central Coast Branch initiated a scholastic sponsorship program, with local sponsors supporting our annual scholarship fund for students who are engaged in groundwater studies. If your organization is interested in participating as a Scholastic Sponsor for a future event, please contact a Branch Officer. Sponsors will be recognized at our meetings and on the GRA website.
Sponsors : If you would like to sponsor a GRA Meeting or other event, or volunteer your time or services to any one of the many GRA-sponsored activities, please contact Dan Detmer at email@example.com or (805) 525-4431. Presently, we are in need of sponsorship or donations for our upcoming meetings. Our sponsorship program has two levels:
A contribution of $100 will earn your company a mention in our meeting announcement as well as an opportunity to distribute information regarding services or products at our meeting.
A contribution of $300 or more your organization will be allotted 10 minutes to speak to the group and acquaint them with your services or products and the opportunity to distribute information.
The GRA branch welcomes any ideas for sponsorship that you may have.
