Presented by:

Mark Kram, Ph.D.

Groundswell Technologies, Inc.

A laboratory grade analytical monitoring and response platform has been developed to automatically track dynamic vapor phase pollutants from multiple locations (both indoors and subsurface), trigger alerts and engage controllers when risk level concentrations are exceeded. For acute toxins such as Trichloroethylene that can persist as non-aqueous phase liquids in the vadose and saturated zones, and soluble constituents of large groundwater plumes, inhalation exposure durations on the order of a few hours can potentially cause harm to the unborn fetus when mothers in their first trimester of pregnancy are exposed. To address vapor intrusion of potentially harmful chemicals into buildings, the monitoring and response system has been designed to protect building occupants through automated alerting, coordinated evacuations and building pressure controls. All field measurements are instantaneously telemetered, mapped and archived through a web dashboard. This presentation will include case studies from several field deployments as well as important revelations and observations related to natural atmospheric and pressure dynamics on subsurface contaminant vapor transport and exposure risks.

SPEAKER BIO:

Mark Kram is he Founder and CTO for Groundswell Technologies, Inc., a group specializing in automated Cloud based monitoring and modeling of environmental sensor and analytical instrumentation networks. Dr. Kram earned his Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Management from the University of California at Santa Barbara, an M.S. degree in Geology from San Diego State University, and his B.S. degree in Chemistry from the University of California at Santa Barbara. He has over 30 years of experience using innovative environmental assessment techniques, has authored articles, national standards and book chapters on the subject, and has taught graduate level courses on related topics. Dr. Kram is an active member of the National Ground Water Association (NGWA) and the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM Subcommittees D18.21 and E50.02). Dr. Kram recently co-chaired an ASTM International symposium on continuous soil vapor chemical measurements, served as Editor for the ASTM International book entitled Continuous Soil Gas Measurement: Worst Case Risk Parameters is the recipient of the NGWA’s prestigious Technology Award, and received the 2014 ASTM Committee D18 Technical Editors Award.

Peter Scaramella is an Associate Risk Assessor with Haley & Aldrich in Oakland, California. He has 10 years of experience with vapor intrusion, indoor air quality, and risk assessment. His primary area of experience involves evaluating potential human exposure to volatile organic compounds in indoor air via the vapor intrusion pathway. Mr. Scaramella has designed and implemented numerous subsurface and indoor air sampling programs to evaluate potential exposures in indoor air and validate fate and transport models. His work has resulted in regulatory closure at sites impacted with petroleum hydrocarbons or chlorinated solvents. Mr. Scaramella holds a B.S. in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley and a M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
