AGENDA

GRA is pleased to again host a one-day symposium focused exclusively on the assessment and remediation of chemical releases from dry cleaner sites.  This symposium has been one of GRA's most popular events and again promises to be a blockbuster!

Much has happened since this popular symposium was last held in 2012.  There are new high-resolution site characterization (HRSC) technologies for mapping chlorinated solvent DNAPL in the subsurface, new approaches and technologies for assessing the risk of vapor intrusion (VI) at former dry cleaner sites, and new technologies and requirements for assessing the role of leaking sewer lines and other man-made conduits in spreading subsurface contamination.  Perhaps the most important recent development in California is the establishment of a new funding mechanism, the California Site Cleanup Subaccount Program (SCAP), for funding assessments and cleanup of chemical releases, including dry cleaner sites in California!

We have assembled a lineup of top invited speakers from around the country that you won’t want to miss!  Kathryn Dominic, SWRCB SCAP Unit Chief, will provide an overview and update on California’s new source of funding for dry cleaner sites.  To add a national perspective, Peter Doorn from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality will share key lessons from his state’s 20 years of experience managing a dry cleaner cleanup fund.

Randy St. Germain (Dakota Technologies) and Seth Pitkin (Cascade) will describe the new high-resolution technologies for characterizing residual PCE DNAPL source areas and dissolved plumes.

Vapor intrusion is a critical concern at dry cleaner sites, many of which are at sites undergoing redevelopment.  We are pleased to have Claudio Sorrentino (DTSC) and Cheryl Prowell (RWQCB) share CalEPA’s new draft approach to evaluating and managing VI risks to building occupants.  Todd McAlary and Robbie Ettinger, two VI heavy-hitters from Geosyntec, will speak on applied VI research at Vandenberg Air Force Base and risk based decision making at VI sites, respectively.

In a first for this Symposium at GRA, there will be a session devoted to the role of sewer lines in redistributing VOCs released from dry cleaner sites.  Some of the nation’s authorities on this topic, Tom Mohr (SCVWD), Olivia Jacobs & Jim Jacobs (Clearwater Group) and Robert Morrison (author of the bestselling book Environmental Forensics) kindly accepted our invitation to present at our event.

Drycleaner cleanups often become ensnarled in legal issues and more often than not are underfunded.  So, we have invited some of the best legal minds and experts to help us find the best path forward.  Speakers in this session include Peter Krasnoff (WEST), Jim Arnold (The Arnold Law Practice) and Tamarin Austin (SWRCB).

Our final session will be a panel discussion featuring several of the day’s speakers, joined by attorney Ed Firestone (Castellon & Funderburk LLP) and Eric Silver (Regency Center), to offer their perspectives and recommendations on overcoming obstacles to efficient cleanup and restoration of dry cleaner sites.  Key points and recommended action items from the Panel Discussion will be recorded and published in GRA’s Hydrovisions Newsletter.

In addition to platform presenters, a dozen hand-picked technology and service providers that cater to dry cleaner site assessment and cleanups will be in attendance to provide hands-on, practical guidance on dry cleaner site assessments and remediation.

GRA’s Dry Cleaner Symposium has consistently been one of GRA’s most popular events.  This year’s event promises to be particularly popular and will likely sell out so be sure to register early!
