An Overview of PFASs and their Concern to the Navy
John Kornuc, Ph.D.

PRESENTATION:
Dr. Kornuc will be presenting an overview of PFASs and their concern to the Navy. He is principal investigator of an ESTCP project to characterize the nature and extent of PFASs in environmental media at DoD sites using high resolution sampling and specialty analytical techniques developed by team partners at the Colorado School of Mines and Oregon State University. This project will determine the environmental behavior of an unprecedented list of up to 300 PFAS compounds associated with Aqueous Film-Forming Foams (AFFF). As principal investigator of a NESDI project, he is investigating the effects of prior remedial efforts, such as advanced oxidation processes for treatment of co-contaminants, at sites where PFASs are also likely to be present. In another NESDI project, Dr. Kornuc is determining the factors which govern the environmental behavior, transformation, and potential toxicity of PFAS by sampling biota and the media to which receptors may be directly and indirectly exposed, and assessing structure/activity relationships of the PFASs detected. In another ESTCP project, he is investigating the use of an enhanced advanced oxidation process to treat PFASs. Dr. Kornuc has led the establishment of the NAVFAC EXWC PFAS Transport and Treatment Laboratory at EXWC’s Port Hueneme, California location. He also presented the current state of PFAS regulatory considerations, analytical, and treatment approaches at the 2016 Navy’s Remediation Innovative Technology Seminar (RITS) series.
SPEAKER BIO:
Dr. Kornuc is a physical scientist with the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center (NAVFAC EXWC). He is the Navy’s representative and principal investigator on many innovative technology projects sponsored by the Navy Environmental Sustainability Development to Integration (NESDI), as well as the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program/Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (SERDP/ESTCP) in environmental restoration. He has over 30 years of experience in environmental investigations and restoration, with an emphasis on fate and transport of contaminants, bioremediation and biotic transformation, and more recently has focused on the emerging contaminant group of compounds known as poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), formerly known as perfluoroalkyl compounds (PFCs). Dr. Kornuc has a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California at Los Angeles and a B.Sc. in Microbiology from Ohio State University.
