Biofilm is defined as a film of microbial growth which consists of the bacterial cells and the slimy exopolymer which binds them to the surface. Although biofilm evaluation is not a regulated protocol, its understanding can aid in resolving many water system problems including water quality, production loss, corrosion, disinfection failures and by-product formation.
The webinar will review the definition of biofilm and how it occurs in a groundwater system. The types of problems caused by biofilms will be discussed in conjunction to the types of microbes associated with the various problems.
The current regulated bacterial component, coliforms, will be reviewed in light of its relationship to biofilm. The testing and evaluation methods for biofilm will be outlined including the predictability of coliform presence. In addition, the resolution to biofilm build up in the groundwater system will be covered noting the proper controls required for effective disinfection and continued monitoring and maintenance.
SPEAKER BIO:
Roger Miller holds degrees in Chemistry and Biology from the University of Central Missouri and serves as a technical consultant for Water Systems Engineering, Inc. Roger has over 35 years of experience in multiple areas of the water industry. His work has involved research & development, project oversight and technical training for source water supplies to finished water transmission and storage.
Roger has served on numerous committees and training programs within national, state and local water organizations. Mr. Miller has authored articles in the Water Well Journal and other similar water industry publications and is a regular presenter at the NGWA national conference.

MODERATOR BIO:
Tom McCarthy works for the City of Anaheim as the Water Planning and Resources Manager in the Public Utilities Department. He also has professional experience working with private firms on water resources and management problems around the world. He is a State of California registered professional civil engineer, as well as a California registered professional geologist. Mr. McCarthy has a Bachelor of Science in Geological Sciences from the University of Oregon and a Master of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles.
