Southern California Branch Meeting: Challenges Associated with Artificial Groundwater Recharge Through Wells in Orange County, CA

Speaker: John Bonsangue

The Orange County Water District (OCWD) manages the groundwater basin underlying the northern two thirds of the county.  In 2008 OCWD began operating the Ground Water Replenishment System (GWRS), a 100 million gallon per day recycled groundwater project.  This discussion will provide an overview of Orange County’s GWRS with specific focus on the challenges associated with distributing GWRS water to OCWD’s recharge facilities and will address the effect GWRS water quality has on the distribution system.

John Bonsangue is a licensed California Professional Geologist with more than 20 years of experience working on Southern California groundwater projects.  A Principal Hydrogeologist with the Orange County Water District, Bonsangue manages OCWD’s injection recharge and distribution facilities.  He is also the president of Reverse Flow Consultants International – a consultancy specializing in groundwater recharge facilities from an operations standpoint.  In addition, Bonsangue is a licensed State of California Department of Health Services water distribution operator.
