GRACast: Detecting Major Sources of Poly-and Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFASs) in U.S. Drinking Water

Drinking water contamination with poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) poses risks to the developmental, immune, metabolic, and endocrine health of consumers. Hu et al. (2016) performed a spatial analysis of 2013-2015 national drinking water PFAS concentrations from the U.S. EPA’s third Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR3) program. A number of industrial sites, military fire training areas, and wastewater treatment plants were the strongest predictors at risk. This webinar will provide background information on PFASs and explore the approach, findings and policy implications of the Hu et al. (2016) paper.

SPEAKERS' BIO:

Simona Balan is a Senior Environmental Scientist in the Safer Consumer Products program at the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC). Prior to joining DTSC, she was a Senior Scientist at the Green Science Policy Institute, where she managed international projects on the use of flame retardants and perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in consumer products. She received a PhD in Environmental Science, Policy and Management from UC Berkeley, and a BSc in Geosciences and Astrophysics from Jacobs University Bremen, Germany.

 

 Xindi (Cindy) Hu is a doctoral candidate in Environmental Health at Harvard University. Her research focuses on human health risk assessment of persistent organic pollutants, including mercury, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs) and perfluorinated alkylated substances (PFASs). One of her ongoing projects models the exposure to PFASs in the US general population via drinking water and its related health outcomes. Xindi holds a Master of Science degree from Harvard University and a Bachelor of Science degree from Peking University, China.

 

 MODERATOR BIO:

Adnan Anabtawi is a Senior Engineer with MWH Global, now a part of Stantec.  He is a State of California registered professional Civil Engineer with several years of experience in Water Resources Planning and Groundwater Studies in California. Mr. Anabtawi has a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Irvine and a Master of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Stanford University.
