Sacramento Branch Meeting - "Holiday Mixer and Raffle"

The Sacramento Branch along with Sacramento AEG is pleased to present:
Mike Hughes

PRESENTATION:
In California, installation of cutoff walls to remediate seepage problems has traditionally been completed using conventional trench excavation techniques for walls as deep as 80 feet and deep mixed methods for walls deeper than 80 feet. These techniques require wide working platforms and require a certain amount of levee degrade in order to implement. Vertical chain mixing (VCM) is a mix-in-place installation technique that can operate from a much narrower working platform and has the potential to be used cost effectively for both shallow and deep applications. VCM has not been commonly used in California, but there is a strong desire locally in Sacramento to use this technique for levee remediation. VCM is also very applicable for environmental remediation and can be used to install seepage interceptor trenches, as well as impermeable barriers. An overview of the different cutoff wall installation techniques will be presented with a focus on VCM. The advantages and disadvantages of each technique relative to other methods will be presented along with examples of environmental and seepage projects where VCM has been used.
