The California Water Science Center (CAWSC) is recruiting for a permanent GS-11/12 Scientist (Hydrologist, Chemist, or Geologist) with experience in groundwater quality studies and an interest in meeting information needs of state and local water managers. The positions in located in our main Sacramento office on the California State University, Sacramento campus. The position is with the California Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment (GAMA) program (https://ca.water.usgs.gov/gam
a/ ), a long-term collaboration with the State of California that provides information on drinking water source quality in groundwaters across the State. In its first phase, GAMA focused on an assessment of condition of groundwaters supplying public water districts. In the current phase, the program is assessing domestic well supply, monitoring and predicting trends in water quality, identifying linkages between water quality and water use, and refining knowledge about human and natural processes affecting water quality and how management systems relate to all of these. Incumbents for this position should be interested in using their expertise in groundwater age dating or geochemical modeling and basin-scale study designs to contribute to an ongoing public dialog by answering key questions, elucidating patterns not commonly understood, and helping managers evaluate whether their programs are effective. Experience as lead author on interpretive reports and journal articles, and ability to work in a team environment are essential. GAMA scientists also collaborate extensively with the USGS NAWQA program. Prospective RGE (research) scientists are strongly encouraged.
